To mark the brewery's 150th birthday in 1997, Carlsberg launched a beer election inviting the Danish public to vote for their favourite of seven new beers introduced in 1996. The aim was to choose one of these beers to become a permanent product in the Carlsberg portfolio. The winner was Carls Special, which is still a part of Carlsberg Denmark's brand portfolio today.
The seven beers contending in the competition was Carls Special, Old Bond, Ottilia, Red X, Master Brew and Stout.
